intro

discourse
If you’ve been on Wattpad before 2018 you’ll remember Vanilla, so I’ll be one of the first to welcome you to Discourse. Compared to Vanilla, Discourse will feel a lot more busy because of all the features and functions it has in comparison. Hopefully after you’re done with this guide everything will start to make more sense.

Please Note Discourse refers to each thread as a “topic” (i.e. the “create a new topic” option). In this guide I will be referring to them as threads since that is the term we use to use for the clubs

robot ambassador
If you haven’t already noticed the welcoming message from RobotAmbassador, someone must have linked you to this thread. RobotAmbassador will take you through a tutorial on how to use a lot of the features in these forums. If you complete the tutorial you get a spiffy certificate. thanks discourse. But if you’re like me. You’ll just mess around and learn as you go.

Other than the tutorial, RobotAmbassador can do some fun scripted things. Some popular features are the magic eight ball esque fortunes and the dice rolls. Tag him by using @RobotAmbassador to test this out.

Check out this thread to learn more about Robot Ambassador and its functions

trust levelsOther than showing how active you are in the server, these levels can allow specific members to do things. You can raise your trust level by doing things around the threads like: replying to comments, liking posts, and reading posts.
0: New: Basically your first day in the threads so you aren’t allowed to do much.

1: Basic: Granted all essential community functions: flagging, create new threads, posting multiple images and links.

2: Member: Granted after a few weeks of being in the community. Access to invitations, more likes (there is a limit to the # of posts you can like)

3: Regular Granted after being apart of the community after a few months. Able to make tags and wikis, a private lounge, a more powerful spam flag, more likes

Leader: Mods. Granted by staff members only. Able to edit posts and pin/close/unlist/archive/split/merge topics

learn more about discourse’s trust levels here

still a little confused? look at this thread by matzeztam that goes more in depth to what you can do with your trust level

settings
Unlike the old forums, there are a few options and settings that you can play with to help customize your experience. You can find the following information by clicking your icon in the upper right hand corner and clicking on the gear icon under the Preferences tab

your profile
Account
Title Your title is a little feature that mostly administrator or moderators have. so you know who they are. It shows up below their username.
If you participated in the beta testing, feel free to show off your Beta Test Survivor title.

Profile
About Me Tell users about your self on here. This information shows up on your mini profile as well. You can use coding, but it will only show up on your main profile.
The mini profile is accessible in the threads, just click on someones icon, if you don’t find anything it means the user has not filled it out yet

Location/Website Feel free to link your personal website or wattpad profile here.
You can not use coding in this section

Wattpad Username This part is the only required section if you wish to update your Profile information. This is required because sometime usernames do not transfer over exactly. (i.e. some 5 letter names with hyphens or dashes may no longer have hyphens or dashes)

Pronouns/Birthday Just more options for you.

your interface
Theme Feel free to chose one of the themes to use in the threads. There are currently three themes: Light, Dark, Clubs.

Interface Language I’m assuming it will already be set in your language, but if you need to change it, you can find it here.

Default Home Page Set the home page for when you first visit wattpadwriters
Categories On the left you can see all the thread Categories — clicking on a Category allows you to view threads only in that category. On the right is a list of the latest activity.
This layout is similar to the landing page of the old Clubs.

Unread See all the unread messages to the threads that you are watching/tracking.

Latest See the latest activity in all the threads.

Top See the most popular threads at the moment.
I have no idea how this is calculated.

Other Change the behavior of how the thread responds to your activities like opening external links in a new tab or not jumping to your post after posting it. You can also hide your discourse profile under this setting

navigation
Tips and tricks on moving around through the threads. Please remember that you can also set your home page in your settings — and navigate the different views in the tabs on the landing page

categories
If you click on a category you can filter the threads that show up. There are also setting on watching/tracking categories. Each category also has sub categories to help filter your searches even further and a set of rules that you should read.

Threads can now be tagged for further filtering. Users below the trust level 3 (Regular) can not make new tags, but you can add existing ones to your threads. Please don’t unnecessarily tag your threads.

You can requests new tags here.

search bar
Trying to find a thread to participate in, or wondering if there’salready a thread for a topic? Theres a nice little search bar in the header that you can use. You can type in a specific word or phrase and some threads will pop up for you.

Click options for a more advanced search

the hamburger icon
This icon is the one inbetween your user icon and the search icon, most commonly know as “the three lines”. This tab has a lot of links that you may find interesting.
:sparkles: cake day will tell you a list of user birthdays
:sparkles: badges shows you all the badges you can earn and how to earn them.
:sparkles: there are also a list of keyboard shortcuts for those who love their keyboard shortcuts :raised_hands:

pinned threads
Are you drowning in pinned threads? Just tap that pin icon to unpin it. This will only unpin it for you, no need to worry that you’re destroying the system.

basics
Just some general information that newcomers or people who are transitioning over from Vanilla

posts & threads Please not that your posts may look different to other users depending on which theme they are using.

1. Starting a thread
Start by clicking the “New Topic” on the homepage in the upper righthand corner. All you need is a title and a category.
You need trust level 1 to do this. If you are not trust level 1 read through some threads, like some posts, and reply to a few posts.

2. Deleting your posts
Users can have their posts deleted in 8 hours. This is a good feature for people who accidentally posts in “under construction” threads. or if you’ve reserved too many posts
Note that deleting your posts does effect the post count number.

3. Editing your posts
Now the threads will remember your edits. I am unaware of how far the history goes and how it works ( i think it takes notes every 24 hours after an edit ). But if you ever accidentally delete something check the small edit button before freaking out.

4. Knowing who posted
Before you enter a thread you might notice the avatars next to the thread name. At most there will be five, on mobile there is only one.
On Desktop
30%20PM
The first icon is the thread maker. 2-4 are frequent posters. The last one is the icon is the last person who posted. You can hover over the icons to see their usernames.

On Mobile
The icon you see is the last person who posted

5.Limits
Character count: 25,000 characters per post
Post count: 10,000 posts per thread

codingIf you are not big on coding discourse has some easy to use functions that will still allow you to add expression into your post with markup. Feel free to check out my guide on coding in these threads at #howtocode. It goes over Markup, BBcode, and some basic HTML stuff (this is the order I would put them in for easiest to understand to most difficult).

If the thought of coding overwelms you, but you still want to do some fun stuff check this out. It comes with a 10 minute tutorial.

Not into coding? Here’s a generator for some fun easy code.

replyingThere are now a few ways on how to reply to someone. No way is "correct" although they might help with the flow of the conversation.
1. The reply button at the bottom of the thread.
this button is most likely highlighted by a background color. It allows you to reply to the topic in general.

2. The reply button to someones post. This allows you to reply to a specific comment. Discourse has a feature that makes it easy to find specific comments to chain of replies.
In turn. one can view the parent post, by clicking the little reply icon on the child post at appears next to the timestamp.

While you’re posting, there are also options to changing how you are replying

Replying as a linked topic is good for threads with versions, making it easy people to find the new or old threads without having to have you link them. Or to fork a conversation if someone brings up a separate subject that you wish to discuss somewhere else because its not directly related to the main thread.

reporting
Once you’re a high enough Trust Level, you can report users who are breaking club rules. Be cautious with your flagging because you have about 5 minutes to retract it before it’s permanent. You are also limited on how many posts you can report at a time — the cool down is 24 hours.
Learn more about flagging posts here: Flags 🏳 and How to Use Them 🤓

linking posts Discourse has a feature that allows you to preview posts that are linked in other discussions/threads. You can link specific posts as well by clicking the “share link” button at the bottom of each post .

The user will get notification that you have linked their post.

polls Need some insight ? Create a poll. There are three types of polls you can make: Single Choice: Each voter chooses one.
Multiple Choice: Each voter chooses an x amount of choices.
Number Rating:People choose a number from a defined scale.
I don’t believe you can change the type of poll you’ve made after it has been made. (I’ve never made a poll before — I will update this when i find out).

the post editor
If you aren’t familiar with coding the post editor can help add a little to your comments.

33%20PM

1. Quote an entire post.
From my experience, You can use this button to quote the entire post you’re replying to.

2. Bold
This feature uses Markup to bold your text. You can highlight to your text first, or press the button and input your text in between the asterisks that will appear. Having a problem? Check to make sure that there are no spaces between your letters and asterisks.

3. Italic
This feature uses Markup to italicize your text. You can highlight to your text first, or press the button and input your text in between the underscores that will appear. Having a problem? Check to make sure that there are no spaces between your letters and underscores.

Note. You can bold and italic text.

4. Hyperlink
If you want a link that has words to click instead of the whole link. Just input your information in the popup. This function uses Markup, some links you post into the text area will show up in the format.

5. Blockquote
A different format for your text that puts it in a little box with a tiny border similar to how quotes look.

6. Preformatted text
This function shows your text before it is coded. You can use this to teach people how to **bold** without them actually bolding or just to get a monospace font.

7. Grid Gallery
This function does currently not work, but it’s still here.

8. Upload Images.
You can code images with HTML with <img src="IMAGE URL"> into your comments. But you can also directly upload images from your device. If you are on a desktop you can drag and drop images into the text area.

9. Unordered List
Use this function for bullet points.
Tip Make your list first, then highlight it and click the button to bullet them.

10. Ordered List
Use this function for a numbered list.
Tip Make your list first, then highlight it and click the button to number each item.

11. Toggle Direction
This function just changes if your text is right aligned or left aligned when typing. But it doesn’t effect your post ???

12. Emojis
Find all the emojis wattpadwritters has to offer.

13. Options

:sparkles: Hide Details
This function creates a collapsable drop down feature.

:sparkles: Insert Date
Allows you to insert a date in the viewer’s timezone. Great feature to use for contests since you can specify a time range
Here’s an example: November 27, 2018 10:34 PMNovember 29, 2020 4:33 AM

:sparkles: Blur Spoiler
Blur some text that may be sensitive to others.

:sparkles: Build Poll
Mentioned about in the special sections. Use this to get feedback from others.

bookmarkingBookmarking your threads puts them in a list that you can view on the front page or on your profile.

HOW TO FIND UNLISTED BOOKMARKED THREADS
If you are apart of the MDC you’re familiar with unlisted threads used for portfolios. If you have bookmarked the thread, click on your profile icon and then the bookmark icon next to the gear to see all your bookmarks including unlisted ones.
If you did not bookmark it… good luck finding it.

tracking/watchingYou can change what kind of notfications you recieve in the threads you make or take part in. At the side of each thread (with the scroll bar) or at the bottom of each thread you will have an option to change your notifications:

52%20PM

tagging vs replyingIf you are replying to someone’s post directly, you do not have to tag them unless you want them to get more notifications.
inviting At the bottom of each thread, there is an invite option, this is similar to tagging but you don’t have to leave a post to notify them.

I.e. summoning members in a competition, duo/group threads, version # thread

why can’t I [something that someone else is doing]
If it’s coding related you might not be doing it correctly. Please refer to one of the coding threads.
If it’s a function/feature please check your Trust Level to check if it is something you’re allowed to do — then ask an admin.

I don’t want to see all these threads
Personally, my homepage is set to Latest and there are a lot of threads I’m not particular to that clutter up the first page. Here’s how to fix that.
Go into your settings under notification > categories and scroll down to muted you can add all the categories you’re not interested in to get them off of your home page. You can view muted threads if you go into the specific category like the cafe page.

why does my username have a 1 at the end ??? If you were in beta, there might have been some issues with how your username transferred over. You can get information and help here
