Beginner tips

What are some tips you have for people who are just starting out writing horror?

Create a clear setting/world-building. Many a horror has something along the lines of a mysterious, or horrible event that has taken place in the past.
Which the MC most of the time wants/needs to find out to solve the problem.

You also want to take into consideration what we humans find scary.
What makes us afraid?
might want to take a look at this video in which that is explained

good info on that.

hope it helps

Some of the best advice I was given was to be descriptive when it comes to horrifying the reader. I’m not a descriptive author by any means, but when it comes to the scary parts I try to be vivid.

Have fun. Horror is very similar to a joke. But darker.

A joke has a build up to a funny ending. A horror story has a build up to a scary ending. (see how similar).

You don’t need massive details, you just need to know how to build up a story and then hit them with the punchline. (pun intended)
