Bit of a lengthier dialogue, but I really like this

“This place…this school… is very lonely, very demanding. Ninety percent of your day is spent learning or studying. When you live like that, the little things mean more to you. The flowers on the garden path are more vibrant, more aromatic. And when a boy stumbles head first into you to avoid trampling those very flowers… what other choice do you have than to fall with him? The sun is brighter, warmer. The people you spend what little time you have mean more to you.”

“It’s even better when the boy shares the same interests, and you can work together on them. If he can make you laugh in a stuffy library surrounded by dusty books—avoiding students with too much stress and too little sleep—then you know you’ve found someone worth sacrificing for,” she answered, anxiously spinning her bed sheets between her fingers.

Soft-hearted, indeed.

“When your story is ready for rewrite, cut it to the bone. Get rid of every ounce of excess fat. This is going to hurt; revising a story down to the bare essentials is always a little like murdering children, but it must be done.”
