What is the difference between horror and paranormal genre? How can they be identified and what features do each of them have to have?
Horror can be anything with thrills and things that are typically meant to scare the reader, the main focus can vary. Paranormal is more of a ghost/spirit aspect. That’s just a simple answer.
What if there are ghosts or spirits but the main purpose of their presence in the story is creating horror and thrill? To scare the reader? Can the story still be categorized only under horror?
I would say that Paranormal is a sub-genre of horror that focuses on the supernatural. In other words, as @kora_adley said, it could still be classified as horror.
Oh, thank you! Got it!
My personal interpretation is that paranormal doesn’t necessarily attempt to elicit terror or horror in the reader.
Horror is the bigger genre and paranormal is just a subset of that as someone else said. And horror’s pretty cool! There’s so much more elements and categories of it than just paranormal. Here’s a pretty cool graph that might make it simplier:
Oh, thank you so much for this!
