Should Wattpad have a black list feature?

We have tags and such, but I was thinking that maybe Wattpad should include a blacklist feature to help readers find the types of books that they actually want to read. Recently, I’ve been going through the tags and when I click on the “scary” tag or the “horror” tag, it’s honestly kind of disturbing how I find something like romance instead. And I like romance, but it’s not what I want to read at the moment. I want pure horror.

Also, I think it would be good for those who have triggers for such things such as rape, suicide, and violence. Sure, an author could just put the trigger warning, but a blacklist I feel would be more efficient if those types of triggers are tagged in the story and someone is able to blacklist them out.

It was a lot easier to search for horror stories by genre when the whole site was run by genre instead of story tags. I sometimes look for certain tags but instead I find something completely unrelated. It shows up because the reader puts the romance tag in a horror genre, or vice versa. Wattpad will have to fine tune how stories are searched and the searcher will have to be able to block out certain tags.

Oh, I feel like you can do that, but I don’t remember how. @Sandcat @FantasybkLover

Why am I tagged here?

I think this would be a great feature. Personally i’d like to be able to filter out stories I have no interest in and i could do that with a blacklist.

I’d like to see it on stories rated mature, because i’m ok withviolence but not sex, but unless the writer says “rated mature because of…” i have no idea why a story is rated mature and i usually don’t read them. If i knew why the rating had been applied, via something like a blacklist or filter system, i could choose suitable reads without missing others.

They said for Fanfics you can include the minus symbol, but even so, they still show up. I’d like a do not recommend again button more because I see THE SAME STORIES EVERY DAY.

Oops. Wrong thread XD

I couldn’t remember if it was you or someone else who knew how to do what they’re asking

You can actually filter stories when you’re searching for them! You can do this by typing “-whatever” in the tag search bar.

For example, if you’re looking for a non-fanfic, historical witch novel with no romance, you could type in “#historical #witch -fanfic -romance” and you would get a list of stories with the #historical and #witch tags but without the #fanfic or #romance tags.

It’s a really nifty feature, but I personally would like a blacklist anyway for stories that are recommended.

Problem with that one is people have actually started tagging their books with -fanfiction, -romance, -whatever so it gets around the user being able to sort the search that way. If they could lock thos tags then being able to search using - would be amazing.

I’m not sure I’d call it a black list but definitely would like a way to tell the algorithm I don’t actually want to read a certain something just because I searched for it. As someone who needs to go search published books that were copyrighted and posted illegally to wattpad and occasionally helping with the porn searches, the rare occasion I check my main wattpad page has some…uh…interesting books on there. I mean that’s helpful when I’m being ambassador prisim because often times more illegal stuff pops up, but if I were trying to find something to read that would seriously suck.

Last time I looked my homepage was a collection of literotica, my books, and fanfics of the published books I’ve searched for. None of which I’d read as a reader.

Seriously??? That’s pretty not cool on the writer’s part.

I’ve seen that, but I always assumed it was a typo! Like someone tried tagging it #fantasy-romance but added a space by mistake… locking the tags could definitely solve that problem.

I also want a “do not show me this” thing. I do Content for Outreach which means I’m scrolling through a random assortment of stories usually that I’d never read every week. The homepage has also given me some interesting suggestions (more fuel for the banned fire lol).

My homepage is Paid Stories, stories in my library (that aren’t still in my library), a list of stories I’ve already read and some more Paid Stories… scrolling through I actually found one I’d want to read, but for the most part it isn’t super helpful as a reader

That’s definitely possible for some of them, but I don’t think it’s the case for all of them.

I always pitied content mods for this very reason. Like I only set aside 1-2 hours a week to my copyright and content searches so maybe if I actually searched more for myself (I really need to find a way to read ebooks without my dyslexic issues giving me fits) more often it would offset some of the pain a little. But the poor content mods who always have to go look for the sex probably have nothing but sex on their homepage :joy_cat:
