VERY Picky Reader Looking for Stories (Sci-fi, Fantasy, plus other genres but NO Romance or Fanfics)

I’m trying to get more into reading but my pickiness gets in the way  Can you help me find something to read? Beware, I am EXTREMELY picky

These are genres/topics I’m interested in:

  • Sci-fi: I especially like dystopians  Steampunk is also quite interesting to me. Aliens are cool, too
  • Fantasy: high and low are both good but nothing with demons/devil, please. Not my cup of tea
  • Sci-fi fantasy: get the best of both worlds
  • Superhero: I like superheroes
  • Historical Fiction: especially stories revolving around royalty
  • Secret Royalty: but with no romance - like going into witness protection or something
  • Some teen fiction: Stories revolving around overcoming hardships
  • Assassin stories: I one time got invested in this story where girl assassins were disguised as geishas but lost it :sob: But another story like this would be cool to read
  • Animal stories: whether about a human and their fluffy companion or a Warrior Cats type situation (though I’ve never read it, I’ve wanted to), I like stories with the cute fluffs (scales, feathers, or whatever)

In addition to no romance AT ALL or fanfics, I also ask for no horror, gore, demons/devil, or excessive bad language

If you have a story fitting this picky list, please share! I have Need2Read :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Please leave a suggestion in this format:

Do you like poetry?

I have a high/dark fantasy based on historical timeline but imagined places. No magical creatures or magic. Revolves around both royalty and tribes. There will be disguises, political themes, epic wars and warriors, betrayal, manipulation, loyalty, and psychological issues. A few characters are assassins, others are badass warriors and just hard people through and through. No detailed sex or gore but it’s angsty and not a light read.

The centuries-long war between two races is coming to an end; its outcome rests on the shoulders of a king, a prince, an oracle, a slave, a young girl destined to end the war, and the love that turns them all into monsters they never thought they’d become

P.S. My assassin was a celebrated male escort

You’re good

Title: A Hundred Words Are Worth a Picture

An enthusiastic fetus, a rebellious hound, an android child for sale, ‘rain’ that brings Happiness, a game that claims to be the key to world peace… the connection?

Cavemen. Perhaps, humans have never left their Cave. Perhaps, Humanity is doomed to witness the same woes, the same horrors, not in a world of stones and bone spears, but of androids and artificial rain.

Deeply metaphorical, this collection of satirical flash fiction and prose poetry explores the immutability of human nature. Through cross-section story pairs, it draws parallels between snapshots of the Past and Present (“Cavemen” section) and of the Future (“Androids” section).

Title: Where Eggs Bleed Brimstone

From the whimsical escapades of a Baroque Casanova to the gloomy journey of a murderous sorceress, this is the satirical history of the city of Brimstoneburg told through the tales of its fools and knaves across centuries.

Among them, the journey of pious little Jane from virtuous village girl to feared serial killer who wears her victims’ skins becomes the spine that centers this ragtag collection of fables. She leaves decrepit Brimstoneburg for the prosperous Capital in pursuit of her romantic fantasies, which happen to involve the Kingdom’s most powerful prince.

Her story is an allegorical battle against traditions, social expectations, sexism, and racism and the center piece to this depiction of a fictional, yet familiar society.

I think my book would be a perfect read for you! There’s no romance, no language at all, no horror, and no gore! :smile_cat:

Title : O2

Blurb :
The Earth is dying, yet humanity survives. Pollution and radiation run rampant on the surface. The government rations food and clean air for everyone. The glass domes provide some sense of security, but they are only for the rich who can afford the astronomical price of providing precious clean air to a whole city.

Nym and her family live outside the dome when the disease breaks out. Spreading through the Minor City Shelter and then to Shelter’s around other cities, nothing seems capable of stopping it. People going mad and dying off like flies. There’s no cure they can find. They only know one thing.

Their last precious resource is going to be the death of them.
Anything interesting you’d like to add: There’s no romance, no language, no gore, and it’s far from horror. The story is a dystopia as you said you enjoy, so I hope you enjoy the book!

Sorry to bug you, I just have a clarifying question: when you say no romance, do you mean that you don’t want books where romance is the main plot/genre, or do you prefer stories with no romance whatsoever?

For decades, the Institute for Cetacean Advancement has controlled Earth through puppet regimes, using their slave army of technology-enhanced dolphins and whales. Dr. James Morris is their leading bioengineer, and his best friend is Coda-9994, the highly intelligent hybrid sperm whale whom the ICA intends to send to a far-off ocean world called Ouroboros in order to assess its habitability for humans.

When a group of criminalized freedom fighters offers him a chance to save his best friend, Jim finally has a chance for redemption. But how willing is he to get his hands dirty? Will he and Coda-9994 be the saviors of whale and humankind, or is Jim just another pretty puppet?

Based on the short story that took first place in National Geographic’s “Planet or Plastic” contest.

Contains some foul language.

Hi! I don’t know if you’ll be interested but if you are, I’d really appreciate it if you would check out my story. :two_hearts:

Title: The Apprentice and the Lost City
Blurb: Emma Marsh has always been known to have her head in the clouds. Dreaming of things such as riding dragons and casting spells, everyone in the city of Sonder knew that the child’s dreams would never come true. Dragons have been extinct for hundreds of years and, not to mention, she’s not even a witch!

As it is revealed that Emma is the heir of the notorious wizard, Merlin, she will finally have the chance to make her dreams come true. Now, with powers way beyond her control and the whole world keeping their eye on her, Emma will have to prove that she is worthy enough to wield her new magic…But, how will she do that if she can’t even pass her exams?

No worries  But no romance whatsoever. I don’t completely hate the genre/sub genre but my pickiness is too extreme levels so for simplicity sake, no romance at all

Title: Death Of The Flowers

Here is the link, if you are interested

Aaron was never meant to be king. He was a bastard, raised to be in the palace’s shadow, not ruling it. Never ruling it. However, when the king’s health starts to deteriorate and his true heir is nowhere to be seen, Aaron might just have to accept the crown. Between fighting a mysterious group, trying to find his brother and trying to stay alive, Aaron realizes there is more to magic than what he’d always thought.

Hope you like it! And thank you

I don’t usually post in these, but I’ve got some that might fit! I saw steampunk and did a little wiggle because that’s my favorite subgenre

Title : The Eagle’s Arrow

Blurb : Adalé Whitmore never expected to become involved with an international conspiracy her first day of work.

After traveling across the continent to seek her fortune, a job as a navigator aboard the beautiful Eagle’s Arrow airship seems like a godsend, even if it is offered by a possibly insane captain. That is, until the crew discovers a mysterious device that should not exist hidden in their cargo, a device that people are willing to kill for. Adalé and her new crew join in a deadly race of riddles to discover the truth of the impossible machine before it’s too late.

Set in an alternate version of 1887, The Eagle’s Arrow takes readers on a journey around a rich steampunk world in a story of mad scientists, aerial libraries, unlikely friends, and just the right amount of tea.

Anything interesting you’d like to add : This one is mine! There’s a small romantic-ish subplot, but it ends in an unconventional way; the story focuses on friendship rather than romance when it comes to relationships. There’s some violence but no descriptive gore, and the language doesn’t get worse than Victorian vulgarities. I hope this is what you’re looking for!

I’m also going to fill out another form for one of my favorite stories on Wattpad and in general: Edgewise by @krazydiamond.

Title : Edgewise

Blurb : The Edgewise exists everywhere and nowhere. A sanctuary to all realms, should you find the door. Managed by one Macklemore Edgewise, proprietor, guardian of the between places, and barman of mystery.

If the tavern accepts you, abide by the rules.

1. Leave all conflicts outside.

2. No murdering one another. Occasional maiming and righteous wounding exempt.

3. Never leave the door open. There’s no telling what will sneak in.

Anything interesting you’d like to add : This is one of my favorite stories. It won a Watty, and it’s super deserved but honestly needs more people to read it; I think everyone should read it. It’s a wonderful steampunk-y fantasy adventure with lots of magic and heart. It’s got a little bit of romance and a little bit of violence, but the story itself is so amazing I think you’ll enjoy it despite that. It’s such a good story!!

I’m a new writer and have one sci-fi story complete. “Operation Meteorite.”

It’s a short sci-fi story with approximately less than 10 chapters but is still packed with strong emotions. It’s still ongoing though, but not for long. It’s taken place in the future and had a tragic ending. (I don’t know how to make a synopsis so read this book if you wanna know)
