Why are the genres on Wattpad so messed up?

I was searching in the Non-Fiction setting and I keep running into Fiction books. I’m in the Historical Fiction and I see fantasy. I never seem to get what I’m looking for. I understand that many books are in multiple genre’s, but most of the time it feels like the author doesn’t know what the genre they put their book in is supposed to be.
Authors will say that their story has sex scenes and mature themes but don’t mark their story mature, frustrating me when I look at books I think are interesting.
Does anyone else have this problem? And can we do something about it?

You can actually have a few sex scenes and not mark it mature. Same with some other mature themes, I believe.
The genres might be glitching up.

Yeah, but I’ve seen author’s specifically say- “This story is mature!” and I think "Why didn’t you mark it as such, then!

They don’t realise they’re supposed to? Or it’s from back when mature stories couldn’t rank and they were trying to get around that.

True. but I feel that sometimes it’s because they don’t notice, and I feel that Wattpad could have a better system for posting stories that would help readers understand what genre they are posting their story in and when they need to mark their stories as mature or not.

Fun fact, if you mark your book as mature, than anyone below the age of 18, or those who don’t even post their birthday on their profile settings, can’t see mature books in the search section. They literally hide your book from being found.

wait, so anyone who didn’t enter their birthday is missing out on my story?! Reee!

Yeah, I figured that out way too late. Honestly, it makes more sense to not rank it as mature and to add a warning in the first chapter instead.

Sounds good, the entire book isn’t smut so it should be alright

It might be due to how mature material is handled on Amazon. I understand that if a story is marked as “adult” that is taken to mean it’s pornography. Authors might be assuming this is the case when posting books on Wattpad.

Thank you for the info.
This is a good reason not to mark books as mature.

Lol…

Its because Wattpad basically got rid of genres, and now they have tags. So a fantasy story could be set in medieval times so they tag it historical too. It’ll rank in both fantasy and historical. Some authors tag irrelevant tags too.

Also, for mature, if you don’t set it to mature and it needs to be mature, wattpad may find it and manually change it to mature as it needs to be filtered out. If underage users really want to read the content, they’ll up their age.

This is pretty much the case. It’s awesome in the sense that stories get to have a wide range to cast their net in, but sometimes, it can make searching for stories to be rather difficult.

What you can do is when searching by tag is for fantasy use +fantasy -historical so anything with historical tag will be removed. I do that for fanfiction. Only works if they’ve been tagged that unfortunately :sob:

Its worth noting that historical fiction is still, well, fiction, not biography or historical accounts, Some of that will have fantasy elements. Reading the blurbs accompanying the works will help winnow things down to your interest areas,

My biggest complaint is when Hamilton fanfiction ranks high or random Hitler quotes. Before, these would be separated.

I thought it was everyone under 13? I swear Iread that on the official wattpad guidelines.

As far as I’ve seen, its below 18 as Wattpad categorizes Mature as 18+

I’ve just checked it out. It’s 17+.
